Samsung Smart TV 55“QN700c 2023/24, picture quality, experiences.
Samsung Germany, KölnerStr.12, 65760 Eschborn
(1) During the initial setup, the WiFi network is only recognized on the second attempt (I entered the password carefully!). “There is no internet connection” is displayed. This only occurs later over time. That surprises me very much. With smartphones, this always works immediately and without any complications. This has not improved compared to our old SUHD TV from 2015. There’s something wrong with the operating system!
(2) The remote control instruction manual is poor. Briefly press the channel switch button: program overview/guide, long press: channel list. That should be said! I kept pressing and trying for too long until the program overview appeared. I continue to use the old remote control.
(3) Some things became more complicated. For example, the signal strength/quality display panel was accessed with the “Info” button on the old device. Now I have to laboriously go through the menu hierarchy and it doesn’t always work on the first try
(Menu->Settings->Device care->Self-check->Signal strength).
(4) A Bluetooth keyboard is advisable for the smart function/Internet. I can’t find any information about this in the instructions.
A subsequently purchased BlueTooth keyboard can be paired immediately. A lot of things are controlled using directional buttons. The Escape key leads to the main menu and there to the Internet. Only there can you move the mouse arrow with the trackpad.
(5) Hopefully the QLED pixels will last a little longer than on the SUHD device from 2015. They were already very weak after 8 years.
(6) HD+ channels are included in the price for 6 months. Setup in the Apps menu. However, the “HD+” app can no longer be removed from the main menu like the other apps. Switching to the old favorites list with SD channels is not possible. This seems to me to be an attempt to pander to pay TV.
If you no longer want HD+ etc., it’s a hassle to get back to the old SD channel list. To do this, the network operator (HD+) is deleted and “TV” is set as a replacement. Settings/Image/Sound…->Network operator->HD+ -> delete.
ZDF/ARD (~8 channels) and their media libraries are HD anyway. Movie channels (RTL/SAT1/pro7…) are kept in “SD” (~0.5MP =1/2 HD resolution). If you already know all the action films and are more focused on cultural channels or media libraries, that’s how it works.
(7) Image adjustment: The image quality can be further improved with “Brightness/Contrast/Color Saturation/Background Color”. To do this you have to switch off the “economy/eco mode”. Only the sharpness of the image cannot be changed. “Sharp” or “unsharp” makes no visible difference. This setting is just decoration. But that would be important for the blurrier SD channels. Is this also used for pay TV delivery? The option “Make SD channels closer to HD quality” doesn’t help either. The image quality of the SD channels is unfortunately worse than that of the SUHD predecessor model.
(8) Result: Good image quality. The operation and menu, with its deceptively colorful variety, is one of the worst things I have seen in 60 years of TV technology experience. SD channels can no longer be improved as easily as with the previous model.
