Synopsis
A middle-aged man, Pietro, becomes a widower and must take care of his daughter. He will never have the time to delve into his own pain, committing himself to raising his daughter with love and dedication, in an all-encompassing relationship in which one heals the other’s wounds through his own. When, after a few years, he tries to start a new life with a new partner, not everything will go as hoped: his daughter’s reaction will be exaggerated and Pietro will be put to the test. He will find himself struggling between anger and paternal instinct.
Pietro, a man in the prime of his life, finds his world irrevocably altered when he is suddenly widowed, leaving him solely responsible for his young daughter. In the immediate aftermath of this profound loss, Pietro has no opportunity to properly process his own overwhelming grief. Instead, he pours every ounce of his being into raising his daughter with an unwavering commitment and boundless love, forging a deeply symbiotic relationship. Their bond becomes a sanctuary, a unique space where each subtly helps the other mend their emotional wounds, creating a shared existence that is as nurturing as it is all-consuming.
Years pass, and their extraordinary connection continues to deepen, defining their every interaction. Pietro, having dedicated himself entirely to his daughter’s well-being, eventually feels the stirrings of a desire to cautiously embrace a new chapter in his own life. He tentatively begins a new relationship, hoping to find companionship and perhaps a different kind of solace. However, this seemingly positive step forward unleashes an unexpectedly fierce and intense reaction from his daughter, who perceives this new presence as a profound threat to their unique and cherished world.
Pietro is abruptly thrust into an emotional crucible, caught between his burgeoning personal happiness and the raw, almost primal, protectiveness of his paternal instinct. The film meticulously explores his internal struggle as he grapples with the anger and frustration stemming from his daughter’s resistance, juxtaposed against his deep-seated love and understanding for her pain. This delicate balance of emotions forces him to confront the complexities of grief, loyalty, and the evolving nature of family bonds.
This poignant Italian drama, often referred to as *Una Figlia*, offers a compelling look at the enduring power of familial love in the face of adversity. Directed by the acclaimed Matteo Ricci, it features a powerful performance by Riccardo Scamarcio as Pietro, alongside the compelling talents of Greta Scarano as his daughter and Jasmine Trinca as his new partner. With an IMDb rating of 7.4/10, the film masterfully navigates the nuanced emotional landscape of a family striving for healing and connection.
