Synopsis
After crash-landing on an alien planet, an asteroid miner must contend with the challenges of his new surroundings, while making his way across the harsh terrain to the only other survivor – a woman who is trapped in her escape pod.
In the desolate expanse of a distant, uncharted exoplanet, the brutal reality of survival hits hard for asteroid miner Kaelen (Jake Gyllenhaal) after his vessel is catastrophically crippled during an unexpected atmospheric re-entry. Stranded and utterly alone amidst a landscape of jagged, crystalline formations and volatile geothermal vents, Kaelen’s initial despair is momentarily eclipsed by a faint, desperate signal – the only other sign of life within a thousand-kilometre radius. It’s the distress beacon of another escape pod, its sole occupant, Dr. Elara Vance (Florence Pugh), trapped and facing her own rapidly diminishing prospects for survival.
What unfolds is a gruelling, high-stakes odyssey across a truly unforgiving alien terrain. Kaelen, with only his wits, dwindling oxygen, and a damaged comms unit, must navigate treacherous canyons, evade indigenous predatory flora, and endure extreme weather phenomena that would shatter the resolve of even the most seasoned spacefarer. His progress is slow, arduous, and fraught with peril, each step a testament to the sheer will to survive and the desperate hope of reaching Elara before her life support fails or the planet’s insidious dangers claim her.
Through intermittent, crackling transmissions, a fragile yet profound connection begins to form between Kaelen and Elara. Her voice, a beacon of humanity in the vast silence, becomes his sole motivation, pushing him through exhaustion and despair. Elara, meanwhile, battles her own claustrophobic nightmare within the confines of her damaged pod, rationing supplies and desperately assisting Kaelen with what little sensor data she can glean, all while confronting the terrifying uncertainty of her fate. Their shared ordeal highlights the extraordinary resilience of the human spirit, forcing them to confront not only external threats but also their own deepest fears and vulnerabilities.
The film masterfully builds tension as Kaelen races against an impossible clock, facing a final, monumental obstacle that threatens to derail his desperate mission just as he nears Elara’s location. The raw, visceral struggle for survival is underscored by a powerful narrative of connection against all odds, making ‘Long Distance (2024)’ a compelling exploration of isolation and the enduring power of human connection.
